If you are looking to increase the value of your home quickly, one of the best ways to do so is by replacing your garage doors. There are a few basic types of garage doors to choose from. But the material which you choose will depend highly on budget, design, and lifestyle.
When choosing the right materials, you’ll want to make sure you pay attention to how much clearance you actually have in your garage. You’ll need to know this in order to decide whether or not you’ll be using a swing out, swing up, roll up or slide to side style of the garage door. Each of them will need a certain amount of clearance for their tracks along with the ceiling and/or walls.
The second step would be choosing the right kind of material.
There are five types of material that we’d recommend.
1. Wood
Although wooden garage doors will carry the highest cost of all, they are also the most authentic and often the better-looking option. The wood composite can produce the same result or close to and also comes at a cheaper price, but, will need more attention and frequent maintenance. The other outstanding pro for wooden garage doors is that they are easily customizable.
- Vinyl
Garage doors made in Vinyl are known for their low maintenance and strong lifespan as they are very sturdy and can withstand a lot of abuse. The only con when it comes to them really would be that they are not available in a very wide range of colors or designs and so might not exactly fit the design of your home.
- Steel
Another material with a low need for maintenance would be steel. These doors are prone to dents and rust through and so are usually a little more costly in the long run. There are ways to minimize this risk, however. A thicker gauge steel or a layer of fiberglass can go a long way to looking after your steel garage doors from rust, bumps, and breaks.
- Fiberglass
Fiberglass doors are easy in that they can be made to resemble any material, from wood to vinyl. You can customize them the way you’d want. Fiberglass doors are also great for areas along the seaside but are not always recommended because they can quickly go yellow in color and end up bending or breaking over time.
- Aluminum
The lightweight, high-cost garage door is best used when you have a sliding set of wide, double doors. Modern-day aluminum doors are heavy and strong, and the laminated panels are very resistant to bumps and dents. There are lower-cost aluminum doors to choose from. These use different materials in their panels and this can bring maintenance up, and lifespan down, due to dents making more of an impact.
